Another video

Here's the video I promised. My husbnd's right - I do need a haircut! Anyhow, it features my chug, Pudgie and was taped this morning by my youngest son, who's 12.

I also wanted to share a news article I just saw yesterday in the paper. Here's a link - http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2011/04/paterson_first-grade_teacher_s/1607/comments-4.html This article illustrates exactly what many of you mentioned in your Internet safety papers about teachers and social media. We also need to be cognizant that we are judged by what we say and do - ESPECIALLY if we are educators! What do you think about this?

  1. Great dog! Amber is right-we do have a lot of pet lovers in our class. First time I heard of a chug. He is so cute.
My dog (really our younger son's dog, but my husband and I have always fed and walked him) is named Griffey, after Ken Griffey Jr. and the turtle is Krispy. My older son brought him home from college at least five years ago, and I inherited him. I don't have the heart to release him since he was born in captivity. I offered him to Barbara deSantis, when she was still a classroom teacher.

  2. Eileen, we have two turtles at the ues, which I suspect are former classroom pets, one in the CST office and one in guidance. I've never owned a turtle. Until yesterday I had cats my whole life. I had to put my (approx.)19 yr old cat down. :-( Other than cats and dogs we've just had fish and hermit crabs.

  3. Professor, Im at work right now and cant open the video but will check it out when I get home. As far as the teacher and the facebook comments, I read about that in the Bergen Record. You are absolutely right, teachers need to be aware of what they say and do at all times. The thing that amused me the most was the comments section in the online version of the Bergen Record when people were saying that suspending the teacher violated her freedom of speech. I was wondering how those people would feel if their children were in that class. Freedom of speech doesnt mean teachers can be inept about their students abilities on their facebook!

  4. Ok, I had to read this article again. This was a first grade teacher who made this ignorant comment! Are you serious?! At this age these children are so young and they are looking for so much guidance. They are barely 6 years old for the most part. This person is obviously was not thinking when she made this comment. Just because she has a teaching certificate, does not mean she is fit to be a teacher. It takes a special kind of person to be a teacher or educator. They have to really want to help/motivate a child to grow and learn.

  5. First of all...such a cute dog:) Secondly, super bad judgment on the teacher's part. Yes, we are constantly being evaluated and judged even when we think we are doing everything right. I was introduced this week to a website called "ratemyteacher" If all of your students love you it's a great site but beware the jaded former student. There were some scathing reports and evaluations on some teachers. Hopefully administrators take them with a grain of salt and consider the possibly defensive perspective of the students who post them.

  6. Very cute dog!! I wish I could break down and get a dog for my kids but let's just say I know my limitations!! LOL

The face book article really is so sad. As a parent I pray that my children's teachers always look for the positives they process(I do understand that it can be hard sometimes). Kids are kids but if you feel so negatively toward them it comes through. It destroys them and the danger is the spiral continues in a downward fashion. They start believing it and then the challenges are so much harder for them, their parents and future teachers. It is unbelievable to me that this teacher can feel so negatively toward 5 and 6 year olds. It has to come through in her teaching and her demeanor. I leave my children's well being in the hands of their teachers everyday. I hope the teachers lift them up not tear them down. Of course there are 2 sides to every story. I hope she was just stupid in writing her comments on face book. Maybe she did not really mean it. Sometimes we don't use good judgment. It certainly is a lesson to others to be careful about what you write. It also supports continuing education on social media. You would think a teacher should be smarter but I guess not in this case.
